How Long Will a Free America Survive?

~ Why Republicans, conservatives, and liberals need to boldly educate voters about America’s founding principles of freedom—and the threats to its survival

Peter presented this content as a public speech at the Gray Republican Committee's January 29, 2019 meeting, at the Gray Public Library. Peter is the current Chairman of that Committee, and is available to give this talk in other locations.

How long will a free America survive?

2018 demonstrated more clearly than ever that the Democratic Party has been subverted by hard-line leftists. This does not mean that all Democrats are leftists. Many, if not most, Democratic voters are good-hearted liberals and fine citizens. In addition, since all humans are sacred, when I speak about leftists I speak of their harmful actions, not their innate value as human beings. My prayer for leftists is that they more deeply consider the values of love, beauty, joy, and freedom, and renounce all ideologies of tyranny.

Unlike good-hearted liberals, when one turns to Democratic, hard-left activists, it’s common to find individuals burning with anger against the status quo. They rage against America, Republicans, and a huge array of perceived injustices. It’s safe to say that Democratic activists are in scorch-and-burn warrior mode. They’re fighting an enemy they actively hate, and they are fighting to win by any means necessary, whether moral or not. They are constantly educating and motivating voters with the latest “horrors” coming from the Republican camp—and their voter base is growing, especially among millennials.

Compared to hard-left Democratic activists, many Republican activists are polite, respectful, considerate, and supporters of fair-play. They’re often busy with jobs and family and don’t share the same intense focus on educating and “riling up their voter base.” In better times, their comparatively laid-back stance on politics would be understandable.

Unfortunately, these are not “the best of times” if one considers the status of freedom in America today. Thus, I believe that the central issue in front of the Republican Party, and indeed all freedom-loving conservatives, libertarians, and liberals, is this question:

Will the American standards of freedom, birthed in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence and in 1788 with the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, continue to endure?

That grand American experiment started by the Founding Fathers has been under siege since at least the 1960s, when Marxists intensified their “long march through the institutions.” Now, it’s not hyperbole to say that the hard-left owns academia, the media, and the Hollywood entertainment complex. Their assault on these institutions is ramping up, with leftists bringing their ideology to K-12 schools and inserting politically correct (PC), leftist propaganda in more and more episodes of popular TV shows.

Although classical, good-hearted liberals are not the same as hardcore leftists, it is unfortunate that huge numbers of liberals have been strongly influenced by an overwhelming cultural blanket of PC groupthink. Because the leftist narrative dominates the culture, liberals who don’t naturally gravitate toward conservative news outlets end up being fed ever more radical content by the left that is hard to resist. Still, increasing numbers of liberals are rejecting the extremism of the left and are joining the #WalkAway movement. They are finding that conservatives are generally far more open-minded and respectful than the Left that they left behind.

A deeply unfortunate result of the Marxist-inspired, leftist barrage of disinformation is that a large percentage of millennials prefer socialism over capitalism, and have an almost nonexistent knowledge of the actual classical history of the West and America that gave them the freedoms and prosperity they enjoy today.

This ignorance and historical disinformation have consequently fueled the rise of totalitarianism in America and the West. One might question that rise, but consider that totalitarianism is not only birthed from a sudden, violent revolution. It also creeps silently toward its goal when people are too busy to notice that freedom is under threat.

Its herald today is the call to “not offend the oppressed.” Since few people want to be offensive, totalitarianism grows by permission, with the growth of identity politics, political correctness, hate speech laws that violate the First Amendment, and condemnations of anyone who speaks up in defense of so-called “oppressors.” Identity politics has succeeded in herding individuals into hostile groups pitted against each other.

Cultural Marxism is driving the marginalization of conservatives and Republicans who dare to oppose the Left’s ideology of political correctness. As we saw with the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, attacks by leftists are vicious and are patterned after time-honored Marxist methodologies.

James Simpson’s excellent article “The Kavanaugh Allegations Are Psychological Terrorism, And It’s Time They End,” published in The Federalist on October 3, 2018, quoted Vladimir Lenin, who said:

We must be ready to employ trickery, deceit, law-breaking, withholding and concealing truth… We can and must write in a language that inspires hate, revulsion and scorn toward those who disagree with us.

Simpson then quoted a Soviet directive which stated:

Members and front organizations must continually embarrass, discredit and degrade our critics. When obstructionists become too irritating, label them as fascist or Nazi or anti-Semitic . . . constantly associate those who oppose us with those names that already have a bad smell. The association will, after enough repetition, become ‘fact’ in the public mind.

Cultural Marxism has succeeded in branding America as an evil, institutionally racist country founded on slavery and oppression. Huge numbers of millennial voters believe this to be true. But it is false. Millions of non-white immigrants are eager and happy to come to America: one of the least racist nations on earth.

Gov. Mills: Open Maine Now!
Gov. Janet Mills of Maine needs to dial back the abnormal fear of COVID-19. A MUCH bigger problem is the collapse of the Maine economy if she continues her Draconian Shutdown. The op/ed below is from Republican State Senator Rich Cebra.
April 16 Letter to the Governor from Maine's Joint Republican Caucus 129th Legislature
On April 16, legislative Republicans submitted a letter to the Governor voicing their own concerns along with questions from their constituents. The original intent was to allow the Governor to respond, rather than communicate through press releases.

News organizations have subsequently obtained the letter with plans to report on it. Therefore, we are making it available, unfiltered, for the public to see.
